NY to hold clinical trials for marijuana; some say not enough

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

From the outside, it would seem New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo's announcement Tuesday signaled a massive shift in his stand against medical marijuana. But for those familiar with this subject, it doesn't.

You might have walked by Bev McClain without ever knowing she's dying. Breast cancer has spread to her brain, nodes, and other parts of her body. Doctors speak not of a cure when it comes to Bev, but quality of life, what remains if it. She says her cancer has metastasized and she is living on borrowed time.

Cuomo announced an agreement between the state and GW Pharmaceuticals, a British company, to hold clinical trials for marijuana-based medication for children who have seizures, saying that "no child should be forced to live with the heartbreaking effects of medication-resistant epilepsy."

Meanwhile, the Compassionate Care Act, a wider medical marijuana bill, is making its way through the state Senate, leaving Bev to say Cuomo's announcement is for show.

Medical marijuana is now legal in 22 states, including New Jersey and some New England states. It is used to treat those with serious illnesses including multiple sclerosis and HIV.

Advocates hope Cuomo will eventually weigh in.
