The Fitz File: June 3, 2014

Posted: Updated:
. - Today is Tuesday, June 3, the 154th day of 2014. There are 211 days left in the year.

BERGDHAL RELEASE DETAILS - Are 5 Gitmo terrorists worth 1 US Solider? The Pentagon concluded in 2010 that Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl walked away from his unit, and after an initial flurry of searching the military curbed any high-risk rescue plans. But the U.S. kept pursuing avenues to negotiate his release, recently seeking to fracture the Taliban network by making its leaders fear a faster deal with underlings could prevent the swap. The 5 who will have to stay in Qatar for a year before going back to Afghanistan, include former ministers in the Taliban government, commanders and one man who had direct ties to the late al-Qaida chief Osama bin Laden.

DESERT STORM MEMORIAL - The US combat operations have ended in Iraq and they are ending in Afghanistan. But before the United States moves to memorialize those wars on the National Mall a new effort is making its way through Congress to build a Memorial to Operation Desert Storm which liberated Kuwait from Iraq's invasion in 1991. Nearly 400 US Troops died in the War, and backers of the Memorial now have a bill in Congressman Phil Roe to select a site on the National Mall in Washington.

ARLINGTON BUILDING HEIGHT - Is Arlington getting too tall? New skyscrapers in Roslyn have peaked the interest of Rep Jim Moran when it comes to building heights near Reagan National Airport. More than 4,000 existing structures nationwide would exceed allowable height proposed by new FAA criteria, including nearly 170 in Virginia. The FAA’s proposed rule would impact public and privately owned real estate near 388 airports throughout the U.S., including Northern Virginia. Moran is sponsoring a bill to force FAA to make its process for height requirements open to the public.

AIRLINE BAG FEES - Should airlines have to tell you what their bag fees are before you get to the airport? Today the Transportation Department will propose detailed fee information that would have to be provided wherever passengers buy tickets, whether online, on the phone or in person. The goal of the new regulations is so that airlines be required to disclose how much they charge for basic items like checked bags, assigned seats and carry-on bags so consumers know the true cost of flying, and not have passengers captive at the airport forces to make last second decisions
