Philadelphia Archdiocese Announces Merger Of 29 Parishes Into 13

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA - Announcements were made in various parishes Sunday morning about closures and mergers.

It's all in an effort to cut-back expenses to deal with a declining population within the church.

Fox 29's Dave Kinchen reports from Immaculate Conception in Levittown.

Church members at Immaculate Conception learned on Sunday they will merge with Queen of the Universe parish about three miles away.

The change will take effect on July 1.

Father Timothy O'Sullivan admits membership has dropped over the years.

The Archdiocese says baptisms and marriages have also dwindled, which are some of the reasons for the merger.

The pastor is asking his members to stay in faith through this difficult time.

The newly formed parish will have more than 10,000 registered parishioners and more than 2,000 attendees at Sunday mass.

Although Queen of the Universe will be the new primary worship site, Fox 29 is told Immaculate Conception will remain open for special occasions.
