Home surveillance video captures Round Rock officers before dog shooting
Since Friday morning, Russell Lane and his wife Hope have been trying to make sense of the loss of their dog "Bullet" after Round Rock Police shot him responding to a burglar alarm.
"I'm just standing here trying to figure out how to start our life over. Without our son, our dog," Hope said.
They say Friday morning around 9 the alarm was triggered by accident because the door didn't close all the way.
Russell says he disarmed it from his cell phone at work but Round Rock Police responded anyway.
Hope got a phone call from the department while she was at work.
"I said 'Well we have a dog' and he said 'Yes, there was an incident' and at that point I think I pretty much lost it,' she said.
With their alarm system, the Lanes also have multi-camera surveillance.
The video shows an officer scoping the place out first.
Then going to the front porch to pop the door open and draw his gun.
On Friday, Round Rock Police told us the officer shouted 8-10 times through the opened door that police were there.
A team of officers eventually go in and later come out -- after having shot the dog.
"My neighbors said it was a barrage of gunfire that lasted for about 3 seconds, then it was over. So they basically just dumped everything they had on him for about 3 seconds. And that really breaks my heart to know my dog died like that, he was probably trying to get away at that point from what was going on," Russell said.
Round Rock Police tell Fox 7 when they walked toward the bedroom where Bullet sleeps, he charged them aggressively.
That's when an officer fired but the dog kept coming so another officer fired. They say they ended up firing 7 shots total.
The Lane's say Bullet was actually hit 5 times -- and Russell doesn't believe his dog was being aggressive.
"If they'd have just waited they would have saw my dog was probably going to wait for them to let him out the backdoor to use the restroom, that's the type of dog Bullet was. But because he was huge, when he stood up, they panicked and they just shot my dog," Russell said.
