The Fitz File: May 30 2014

. - Today is Friday, May 30, the 150th day of 2014. There are 215 days left in the year.

SHINSEKI SPEAKS - His department is at the center of a scandal, and there are increasing calls from both parties for him to step down. At the Grand Hyatt Hotel in DC this morning Shinseki is scheduled to address the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans and provide an update on combating veterans homelessness. The White House says President Barack Obama is waiting for a full investigation into the Department of Veterans Affairs before deciding who to hold responsible.

GOP POT BILL - The GOP controlled House voted this morning to block the government from interfering with states allowing medical marijuana. Virginia's Morgan Griffin sponsored the bill as almost half the states have legalized marijuana for medical uses, such as improving the appetites of cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. But Rep. Andy Harris of Maryland cites a recent DEA study that said that many in the medical marijuana movement are using it as "a means to an end," to legalize recreational use.

SKINS TWITTER BACKLASH - Sometimes things backfire on Twitter. The Redskins thought they'd smack back Senator Harry Reid and the 50 Senators who signed a letter asking NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to force a name change on the team. GM Bruce Allen wrote a letter asking fans to tweet #redskinpride to show their support. What the team wasn't expecting was that opponents of the name would seize on the hashtag and used words like "racist" "genocide" & "brutality" to slam the team and again demand that they should change their name because some feel its offensive. Reid's office calls it "a massive failure"

MEASLES OUTBREAK - Northern Virginia has been dealing with a measles outbreak and now the CDC says Measles cases have hit a 20-year high in the US. It's a troubling increase fueled by international travel by people who have not been vaccinated against the virus. Between Jan. 1 and May 23 of this year, 288 measles cases were reported to the federal health agency, the highest year-to-date total since 1994, officials said. Home-grown measles in the United States was declared eliminated in 2000, but cases imported from patients traveling abroad continue to infect unvaccinated U.S. resident

Fruit packaged by the Wawona Packing Company out of Cutler, California and sold at stores across the country is being voluntarily recalled. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says there is a possibility the recalled products may be contaminated with listeria. No illnesses have been linked to the recall. Certain lots of peaches, nectarines, plums and pluots sold at Trader Joe's, Costco, Sam's Club and Fresh Direct could be contaminated with the dangerous food-borne pathogen.
