Today is Thursday, May 29, the 149th day of 2014. There are 216 days left in the year.

VETERANS CARE TRANSITION - 1:00 p.m. What's it like to step out of a war zone, and then come home to step into another fight to obtain benefits. In the midst of one of the biggest care scandals ever to hit the VA, The House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs Subcommittee on Disability Assistance and Memorial Affairs will hold a hearing which will be examining benefit programs designed to streamline the process active duty service members complete while transitioning out of the military.

MENTAL ILLNESS REPORT - 12:30 p.m. What is the government doing to close the gaps in Mental Health care, that's grown to a crisis situation? Many family members of mentally ill people say they don't have access to emergency beds or treatment facilities. The latest mass shooting in California has again ignited debate over people with mental illness legally purchasing firearms. Today on Capitol Hill Congressman Tim Murphy hosts briefing on report on violence and severe mental illness.

WHITE HOUSE CONCUSSION SUMMIT - 11:10 a.m. Every year nearly 250,000 kids and teens are taken to hospital emergency rooms with brain injuries caused by sports or other activities.  At The White House today President Obama will host a summit with representatives of professional sports leagues, coaches, parents, young athletes, researchers and others to call attention to the issue of youth sports concussions. The President will also announce millions of dollars in pledges from the NFL, the NIH and others to conduct research that could begin to provide answers and improve safety.

DESERT STORM MEMORIAL - The US combat operations have ended in Iraq and they are ending in Afghanistan. But before the United States moves to memorialize those wars on the National Mall a new effort is making its way through Congress to build a Memorial to Operation Desert Storm which liberated Kuwait from Iraq's invasion in 1991.  Nearly 400 US Troops died in the War, and backers of the Memorial now have a bill in Congressman Phil Roe to select a site on the National Mall in Washington.
