WASHINGTON - As the D.C. Council debates it's budget for the next year, council members are considering finding new forms of revenue by taxing fitness memberships. The tax is sometimes refereed to as the "yoga tax."

Under the proposed measure, which was recommended by a special tax commission, sales tax would be added to gym memberships and other fitness businesses.

The idea was briefly floated four years ago, but many residents expressed their opposition, and it was dropped. Now, it's back.

Some are pushing back on the new measure because they believe it will discourage a healthy lifestyle.

Council chairman Phil Mendelson supports the tax, but admits he doesn't belong to a gym. Council member David Catania does not like the idea, and he says he expressed his concerns to Mendelson on Tuesday night. Council member David Grosso said he supports the tax, while Council member Muriel Bowser has never supported it.

Also on Wednesday, the D.C. metro area was ranked the #1 on the American Fitness Index's annual list of fittest cities.  Click here for the full list.
