Posted: Updated:
. - Today is Wednesday, May 28, the 148th day of 2014. There are 217 days left in the
year.

OBAMA WEST POINT - 10:00 a.m. This morning at West Point, the President will deliver the commencement address at the United States Military Academy. The speech comes one day after the president put forward a blueprint for ending U.S. military engagement in Afghanistan by the time he leaves office. Though combat missions will officially end later this year, Obama is leaving behind about 10,000 U.S. troops to train Afghan security forces and try to push back extremists.

U.S. DEPORTATIONS - The White House is asking its Homeland Security chief to hold off on completing a review of U.S. deportation policies until the end of the summer, senior White House officials said a move aimed at salvaging any hopes for Congress to act on immigration this year. Obama in March directed the government to examine if deportation practices can be made more humane. There's a small window in June and July when Congress could act before Their focus turns to November's midterms.

VA SCANDAL HEARING - 7:30 PM The House Veterans’ Affairs Committie holds will a rare nighttime hearing on the VA scandal. The hearing will examine VA’s failure to comply with a subpoena, related to VA’s admitted destruction of what may be the “secret” list cited by Phoenix VA Health Care System whistleblowers. Three VA officials were previously invited to testify May 22, but refused to show up. VA has promised to make officials available today. If they do not appear, VA will be served with a subpoena that would compel all three witnesses to testify before the committee May 30.

ARLINGTON BUILDING HEIGHT - Is Arlington getting too tall? New skyscrapers in Roslyn have peaked the interest of Rep Jim Moran when it comes to building heights near Reagan National Airport. More than 4,000 existing structures nationwide would exceed allowable height proposed by new FAA criteria, including nearly 170 in Virginia. The FAA’s proposed rule would impact public and privately owned real estate near 388 airports throughout the U.S., including Northern Virginia. Moran is sponsoring a bill to force FAA to make its process for height requirements open to the public.

Today's Weather:

@garyfox5dc: Not quite as hot Wednesday. Storms for the afternoon and evening. http://t.co/yY6rlCDdM3

Today's History:

In 1912, the Senate Commerce Committee issued its report on the Titanic disaster that cited a "state of absolute unpreparedness," improperly tested safety equipment and an "indifference to danger" as some of the causes of an "unnecessary tragedy."

In 1959, the U.S. Army launched Able, a rhesus monkey, and Baker, a squirrel monkey, aboard a Jupiter missile for a suborbital flight which both primates survived.

In 1984, President Ronald Reagan led a state funeral at Arlington National Cemetery for an unidentified American soldier killed in the Vietnam War. (However, the remains were later identified through DNA as those of Air Force 1st Lt. Michael J. Blassie, and were sent to St. Louis for burial.)

Today's Quote:

Thought for Today: "Time does not become sacred to us until we have lived it, until it has passed over us and taken with it a part of ourselves." — John Burroughs
