A local National Guard unit is preparing to deploy on a potentially yearlong mission.
Several soldiers from the Georgia Army National Guard’s 876th Engineering unit tell FOX 5 they are going to war out of sense of purpose.
Their job as an engineering company is to train their Afghan counterparts and either construct or dismantle buildings and the like depending on the need of U.S. troops.
There will be a going away ceremony for the 876th Engineering Company Thursday at 10:30 a.m. located at the Baptist Conference Center in Toccoa.
The guardsmen tell FOX 5 they will first go to Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas for some training before deploying to Afghanistan.
