Police release video of persons of interest, vehicle in DC playground shooting

WASHINGTON -

D.C. police have released footage from a security camera that may show the gunman who wounded a 6-year-old girl while shooting at another man in a Northwest D.C. playground.

The video also shows a vehicle the shooter apparently arrived in last Tuesday just minutes before the gunfire on Morton Street.

The wounded first grader, Khalia, is home now and is getting around with the help of a walker. The 6-year-old suffered a flesh wound to her left leg Tuesday when a gunman dressed all in black walked through a playground pulling the trigger on a pistol with no apparent regard for the children in his way.

In the footage, you first see the black four-door vehicle -- which appears to be a Dodge Charger -- at 7:14 p.m. before it leaves the parking lot and comes back two minutes later.

At 7:17 p.m., two people in dark clothing emerge from the car and walk through a breezeway.

All of it was captured by a camera mounted on a building just steps from the edge of the playground.

According to the time stamp on the footage, it took less than two minutes for the gunman to enter the playground, which is still closed, and fire eight rounds from a silver handgun.

The bullets struck a 25-year-old man in the back and 6-year-old Khalia in the leg.

“It hurts when I move it," she told FOX 5 in an interview Sunday.

Although the first grader is getting around with the help of a walker, she is staying close to home.

"I'm scared to go outside," she told us. "I'm scared it's going to happen again."

Buddy Moore's backyard looks out on the parking lot where the car in question was parked that night. He had not seen the video before we played it for him.

“Now that I know it’s connected,” said Moore, “(I’m) a little nervous, but not a lot because I've seen so much in this neighborhood in the 90s and early 2000s. It's been quiet for a while."

Moore said the troubles subsided a while back and have mostly not returned.

"It's disturbing enough when I guess you have gangs competing against one another for whatever reason,” he said. “But when you get the young kids involved, it’s really tough because now the kids are afraid to come out.”

Since the cameras over the playground weren't functioning the night of the shooting, the police just have the footage of the car and the occupants to go by.

Oddly, the car pulls off before the two men in dark clothing return.

Witnesses initially told police the gunman may have arrived on a bicycle.

The man he was apparently after was listed in a police report as being 25 years old. In the press release Sunday, D.C. police said the wounded man sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

There is a $10,000 reward for information.
