(MyFoxBoston.com) -- Comments actress Emma Thompson made in an interview over the weekend are causing controversy.
The 55-year-old British actress told the Daily Mail on Sunday that "You can't be a great mum and keep working all the time."
Thompson, who is married with two children, ages 14 and 26, said she put her career on hold for a year to be a full-time mom and take care of her family.
"A year off was my birthday present to myself. I didn’t actually act or write. I was just a mum," she told the news organization, adding that during that time, among other things, she taught drama at her daughter's school, and cooked meals for the family.
The actress added that women "don't need it all at once," and that the only way she could have continued working would be delegating household duties to other people, which she did not want to do.
"I highly recommend others to do the same if they can afford it."
Her remarks sparked outrage from working moms on Twitter and other social media outlets. Thompson isn't the first actress to receive backlash from her comments on working motherhood. In March, Gwyneth Paltrow told E! News that she thought her job as an actress was much more difficult than women with regular 9-to-5 jobs.
"I think it's different when you have an office job, because it's routine and, you know, you can do all the stuff in the morning and then you come home in the evening," she said. To read more: www.dailymail.co.uk
