OBAMA AFGHANISTAN - President Obama arrived back in the White House this morning after a surprised 33 hour trip to Afghanistan. The president's Afghanistan visit commences a White House effort to frame US post-war strategy. The trip also comes in the during a scandal at the Veterans Administration over care. The President spoke about a drawdown of U.S. forces that will bring the war to "a responsible end" later this year. The president is expected to detail his post-2014 Afghanistan plan during a commencement address Wednesday at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

VIETNAM VETERANS MEMORIAL - 1:00 p.m. - In its 32nd year, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial has become a focal point on Memorial Day. Thousands of veterans and their families congregate at The Wall to remember and to honor the U.S. armed forces. The wreath-laying ceremony is open to the public. 14 names have been added to the wall of Veterans who died of injuries or illnesses sustained in the Vietnam War

VA CARE PROBLEMS - The chairmen of House and Senate Veterans Affairs Committees on Sunday Talk Shows denounced long waits and backlogs at the nations VA hospitals but stopped short of calling for the resignation of Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki. 26 VA facilities are under investigation, as 40 veterans may have died while awaiting treatment. Officials are investigating claims that VA employees have falsified appointment records to cover up delays in care.

MEMORIAL DAY PARADE - 2:00 p.m. - A D.C. tradition continues with National Memorial Day Parade. The parade of Marching Bands and Veterans units from all 50 states steps off at the corner of Constitution Avenue and 7th Streets, NW and proceeds along Constitution Avenue, past the White House, ending at 17th Street. The National Memorial Day Parade is sponsored by the World War II Veterans Committee and includes patriotic floats and helium-filled balloons.
