Families Asking For Different Arrangements After Cemetery Flooding

Posted: Updated:
FEASTERVILLE, Pa. -

Underground and underwater.

A south Philadelphia family is horrified to find their mother and step father's grave flooded.

We’ve had so much rain this month that the grounds of White Chapel Memorial Park in Feasterville have been slow to drain, creating some flooding on some of the burial plots.

Now the family wants the cemetery to step up and make things right.

“April the 25th 2001," Annette Hall said.

She expects her mother to be underground.

“We try to go and visit at least on her birthday, Mother’s Day, any other time we get the chance to go there," she said.

She doesn't expect her to be underwater.

“There’s others around planting, placing flowers, while we’re dipping. Dipping water. Really? That doesn’t sit with me," Hall said.

It was Mothers Day when Hall and her family placed flowers at the flooded grave of her mom Dora Hall and stepfather Alexander Small.

“I can’t touch her. I can’t kneel down to her. I can’t lay next to her. That’s my mom. I wasn’t expecting that. I hurt I cried the whole day. I’m not right still today," Hall said.

That's when she first noticed White Chapel Memorial Park has an irrigation problem.

“The more we dipped the water off, the more it came back. So my thought is, it was coming down under up," she said.

Her mom's plot and a handful of them around it now look like a muddy marsh.

Hall said this is the first time this has happened in the 13 years the grave has been here.

She wants it moved to a different place in the cemetery.

“This is going to be an ongoing problem with the rain. Okay that’s God’s work. I can’t stop God’s work, but I don’t want my mom swimming under this," Hall said.

The owner of the cemetery said they've used water pumps, but because the grave sits in poor drainage area, sometimes they just have to wait for things to dry out.

She wants to talk with the Hall family, but hasn’t committed to moving the plot at this time.
