Thousands pray and fast for rain in Austin

AUSTIN, TX -

Lake Travis is not looking good these days. You don't have to tell Pastor Will Davis Jr. twice.

"I was born and raised in Austin, Texas and I've never seen Lake Travis this low. Or this low this long. I've seen it low and come back up, it does this. We're stuck," he said.

Davis is with the Austin Christian Fellowship. The group made a special video about the drought and last week they prayed for rain before city council. Davis says city leaders helped them declare May 22nd a day of prayer and fasting for rain. Why fasting? He says the point is to humble yourself for something greater.

"When I'm more humble I'm more likely to hear God. When I'm all cocky and arrogant and full, I'm not likely to hear anything. When I'm kind of hungry and I'm praying...I'm listening," he said.

Thursday night, hundreds gathered at Hyde Park Baptist Church for a special prayer service to pray that God will end the drought and get Lake Travis up to 681 feet...that's the fill line.

Davis sees the half empty lake as a metaphor for our half empty lives. And if God can fill that up, maybe he can fill us up too and make us better people.

"We didn't want to hide it. We didn't want to pray and not tell anybody because there's no faith in that. That doesn't require any faith at all. We're gonna tell people we're praying. Then God's name is at stake. Then this is serious business because a lot of people are going 'well I don't believe that.' Well we'll see," Davis said.

The Austin Christian Fellowship is hoping the lake can soon get back up to 681 feet. Right now the LCRA says it's 45 feet under its May average. And they say if we don't get some rain soon we could reach all-time lows this summer.
