Metro Detroit's 'Mother Talley' turning 115 years young

Posted: Updated:

INKSTER, Mich. -- A Detroit-area woman believed to be among the oldest people on earth is turning 115.

Jeralean Talley was born May 23, 1899. The Inkster resident went fishing last year and still gets around on her own with the help of a walker.

Talley plans to celebrate with family and friends at a local church on Sunday.

When asked last year why she thinks she has lived so long, Talley was quick to credit the man above.

"I asked him not to let me be sick, let me not be blind and let me not be deaf. So far my prayers have been answered," she told FOX 2's Maurielle Lue.

On her actual birthday -- Friday -- Talley is going to the doctor for a checkup, although she says she doesn't "feel sick."

According to the Gerontology Research Group, which tracks many of the world's longest-living people, Talley is the oldest American and the second-oldest person in the world.

Her husband died in 1988. Talley is cared for by a 76-year-old daughter who lives with her.
