END OF GOOD SOLDIER DEFENSE - The issue of sexual assault in the military has been a persistent and troubling one for both the victims of it, and the Pentagon and lawmakers who've been trying to stop it through the reform of military justice. Now both House and Senate are taking the same approach to dealing with sexual assault in the military. The bills would change the military rules of evidence to prohibit an accused service member from using good military character as defense in court-martial proceedings unless it was directly relevant to the alleged crime.

ARLINGTON CEMETERY EXPANSION- When the Congress passed the new Defense Authorization bill Thursday it also included a provision that will have a big effect on one of the most well known places in the National Capital Region. In their new authorization Congress has cleared the way for expansion at Arlington National Cemetery: The defense bill includes a land exchange agreement between Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington County, and the Commonwealth of Virginia, supporting both Army efforts for expanded cemetery grounds and Arlington County efforts for a variety of public uses.

NEW NSA LIMITS - While Edward Snowden prepares to appear His first nationally televised interview with an American Televison Network on NBC, the US Congress is taking steps to deal with the fallout of Snowdens release of NSA data. In an overwhelming vote, the House moved the U.S. closer to ending the National Security Agency's bulk collection of Americans' phone records Thursday, the most significant demonstration to date of leaker Edward Snowden's impact on the debate over privacy
versus security.
