U.S. Secretary of Energy in Detroit to discuss lighting progress

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) - Crews have been installing more than six thousand energy efficient LED streetlights in Detroit. Now, new city partnerships are promising more lights and more job opportunities.

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan and the U.S. Secretary of Energy announced what they called a win-win situation Thursday. Three firms with experience in outdoor lighting are providing streetlights to the city and training for Detroit-area students in a booming field.

Cree, Inc., of Durham, NC, Leotek Electronics USA Corp. of San Jose, CA, and Walker-Miller Energy Services of Detroit will provide classes for the students.

The Public Lighting Authority plans to complete neighborhood lighting by 2015. They'll complete underground wiring for main roads and thoroughfares by 2016.
