High School Students Race Cardboard Boats

Posted: Updated:

Pine Lake, MN- Students at a Minnesota high school put their engineering skills to the test.

For their spring project, students at Hermantown High School had to build boats out of cardboard, and make them float.

But, that's not all.

The boat has to float with up to three people in it.

On Thursday, the students tested their projects on the lake.

Their physics teacher has been assigning the project for the past 6 years.

He says students are always a little nervous before the big race.

"The more we talk about displacement and buoyancy the more comfortable they become. They’re also a little apprehensive when they get here because nobody wants to get completely wet. But they have a lot of fun with it," said teacher Ted Perala.

After the race, students enjoyed a lunch by the water.
