Police: Boy, 10, Takes Grandfather’s Truck On Joyride

Posted: Updated:

Tyler, TX- Police say a young boy took his grandfather's truck on a joyride that ended the trip with a bang.

The wild journey began after a 10-year-old boy in Tyler, Texas, started fighting with his sibling at a doctor's office.

The kids were waiting for their grandfather to finish being seen by the doctor, but angry at his brother, one of the boys grabbed the truck's car keys and took off, according to authorities.

While on the road, two men noticed the truck driving erratically down the street and called 9-1-1.

They followed the car, which eventually crashed into a railing at the Discovery Science building in the area.

"I mean I passed the truck at first, and I looked and I didn't think anything of it at first and it took a second to think about it: it looks like my son," said witness Mike Haynes.

Witness Copen King said when the boy noticed they were following him, he got off the road.

"He didn't know how to shut the truck off. I don't see how he put it in reverse. They don't teach that in school yet," said Haynes. "Rush hour on Broadway; run a yellow light. It could have ended a lot worse."

Police say no one was hurt and the truck only received some minor damage.

No charges are being filed against the boy, who was eventually released to a very frustrated grandpa.
