VA FIRINGS BILL - The House today will vote on a bill to give Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki more authority to fire or demote senior executives. Pressure is building on Capitol Hill to overhaul VA after changes of treatment delays and preventable deaths.
VA's Office of Inspector General said Tuesday the number of VA facilities being investigated nationwide for problems had expanded to 26 which an increase from last week when the Senate Committee was told 10 facilities were being investigated.

AIRLINE BAG FEES - Should airlines have to tell you what their bag fees are before you get to the airport? Today the Transportation Department will propose detailed fee information that would have to be provided wherever passengers buy tickets, whether online, on the phone or in person. The goal of the new regulations is so that airlines be required to disclose how much they charge for basic items like checked bags, assigned seats and carry-on bags so consumers know the true cost of flying, and not have passengers captive at the airport forces to make last second decisions

MARYLAND SCHOOL STARTS - How early should school start in Maryland? A task force says later than they do now: The group formed by Gov. Martin O'Malley will recommend that the summer break be extended. This year, school starts in most systems around the state Aug. 26, a week before Labor Day. Maryland officials said that the task force, convened by the Maryland General Assembly last year to study the issue, voted 11-4 this week to recommend that schools open after Labor Day. It's a change that has been championed by Comptroller Peter Franchot for its economic benefits to local businesses and the state's tourism industry. Most superintendents oppose it.

ALEXANDRIA BEST READ - For the third straight year, Alexandria, Va., has topped Amazon.com's list of the best-read cities. The online retailer announced that Alexandria ranks No. 1 for sales of books, newspapers and magazines in cities of 100,000 people or more. Miami was second, with residents there especially eager for books and magazines on self-help, health and mind and body topics. Knoxville, Tennessee, was third; followed by Amazon's home city, Seattle; and Orlando, Florida.
Rounding out the top 10 were mostly college towns: Ann Arbor, Mich.; Berkeley, Calif.; Cambridge, Mass.; Cincinnati; and Columbia, S.C.
