Jockey Victor Espinoza and California Chrome: Belmont Win from 2014 Triple Crown

Posted: Updated:
Jockey Victor Espinoza says he doesn’t know what to expect yet as California Chrome attempts to do what hasn’t been done since 1978- win the Triple Crown.  Espinoza talked with sports anchor Liz Habib on Studio 11 LA just days after winning the second leg of the crown, the Preakness Stakes.  Espinoza says he doesn’t know what other horses are running yet, and so he hasn’t had a chance to come up with a winning strategy.  He says a good post position and a good start will make a big difference.

In a very aggressive start to the Preakness, Espinoza moved California Chrome out of the third position immediately as he went for the win.

California Chrome arrived in New York with his nasal strip.  The New York racing commission has allowed the strip for the Belmont Stakes after his trainer,  Art Sherman, had said he wouldn’t run if he could not wear the nasal strips.  Millions of dollars are at stake, in stud fees and in betting at tracks across America.

Espinoza’s home track is Santa Anita and fans all across the state and country are rooting for an end to the 36 year dry spell for Triple Crown winners.

The Belmont Stakes will run on June 7 in New York.
