Caught On Camera: Alleged Thieves Steal Car With Baby Inside
ST. PETERSBURG (FOX 13) – Police say a teen, along with a friend stole a mini-van from a church parking lot, and once they took off they realized there was a baby in the vehicle. Surveillance video caught the suspects dropping the baby on someone's doorstep.
According to authorities, the baby’s parents were at church unloading tables and chairs on Sunday at Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church in St. Petersburg, Florida.
The pastor had just told Shekeya Gibson about a break-in at the church the night before.
“He said you might want to get your car and cut your car off because if they'll break into a church there's no telling what they'll do in front of a church, they'll take your car," said Gibson.
Police say the two male suspects picked a house, apparently at random.
Homeowner Ursula Boykins says she got home just in time to see the SUV speed off.
“I thought he was taking something from the house. He was not taking something he was leaving us a gift," she said.
That gift was 10-month-old Xenobia Gibson, who was just minding her own business, when her mom's car was stolen from in front of the church.
Her mother recalls a tearful reunion.
“She looked over at me, and I looked over at her crying and she just smiled," said Gibson.
Gibson says she spent all day Monday in bed with her baby traumatized, but she sends a great big thank you to Xenobia's angel.
“Everything happens for a reason, I believe my purpose for that day was fulfilled because I was the one chosen to find that baby on the porch," said Gibson.
