Imagine it. Design it. Hold it in your hands. Technology first introduced in the 1980s is now open to a whole new market with 3D printers regularly available for less than $2,000. It's creating a wave of innovation and new competition among entrepreneurs like Jerry Castanos. He just opened 3D Heights, a full-service printing lab in Washington Heights. Among his top clients are med students at nearby Columbia University.

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - Printing objects including items that you can use in your every day life is not something out of a sci-fi movie, it's happening today and not in technology labs, but in homes. As 3D printing machines become more popular, they're beginning to show up in retail stores just about everywhere.

Good Day New York took a closer look at the 3D printing powers of the Cubify printer and got some help from 3DSystems marketing manager Keith Ozar.

Ozar showed off a guitar made of a nylon material and shoes that cost about $7 to manufacture.

“It takes months and months, almost years to get a custom guitar delivered to you," said Ozar.

The one he brought along was printed in under 20 hours and sells for $3,000.

From guitars to jewelry and doll houses, companies like 3DSystems can create the item or email it to you to print using a wide variety of materials from ceramic to metals.
