81-Year-Old Grandma Goes Skydiving

Posted: Updated:
Wichita, KS- A gutsy grandma in Kansas cashed in on the opportunity to cross skydiving off her bucket list.

At 81-years old, Janice Conner is no stranger to the sky, she previously flew a glider, was on board a helicopter and on many airplanes.

However, for a late Mother's Day gift this year, her kids decided to plan something even more extreme: skydiving.

"By watching things like this on TV, she realized mom would like to do it," said son Daniel McGraw. "One sister ratted us out and told her about it ahead of time," said McGraw.

A short free fall and parachute glide later, the jump was declared a success.

And now that it's off her list, Janice says one jump may be just enough.

"I got to ride in a glider one time over in Hutchinson, and I’ve ridden in a helicopter and ridden in an airplane several times," said Conner. "We're discussing my bucket list and this is one thing I’ve always wanted to do."

Martin Myrtle, the owner of Air Capitol Drop Zone, was even impressed with Conner's jump.

"You have to be in relatively decent condition, so someone in their 80's is pretty rare, but it happens every once in a while," he said.

Janice isn't the oldest person to jump out at Air Capitol Drop Zone; that record stands at 84 years old.

Myrtle says the most common jumper age usually ranges from 18 to 20, or around age 50.
