Camden High School Students Walk Out Of School To Protest Teacher Layoffs

Posted: Updated:

Camden, N.J.- City education officials announced 241 layoffs across the district's 26 schools, including 206 teachers on Monday.

Fox 29's Thalia Perez reports.

Hundreds of students walked out of school Wednesday afternoon to show support for their teachers

"They're getting rid of our teachers. Teachers that care for us," said 11th grader Jamal Dickerson.

Some students marched with signs while others, who are members of the marching band, brought instruments.

They stopped outside the Camden city school district's office where they protested.

Ronsha Dickerson, a mother of 6 kids in the district and a teacher, led the demonstration with other parents, calling on the school's superintendent to reverse the layoffs.

"They fired your favorite teacher. They don't care about these students," said Ronsha.

Not long after the emotional rally began, Superintendent Paymon Rouhaniford came outside and addressed the crowd promising students that no schools would shut down.

"We have a budget problem and we're trying to manage it the best we can," said Rouhanifard.

Rouhanifard insists the budget crisis began with a 75-million dollar deficit and the cuts are necessary to try and close the gap.

He says the cuts will not remove the guidance counselor, librarian and nurse at each school.

"We're gonna pull together our student board reps and start meeting every week as opposed to every 2 weeks, which is what we've been doing," said Rouhanifard.
