EPA Pulls Food Storage Containers

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Any way to make fresh veggies last longer or to help leftovers keep a few more days is a good thing, right? Storage containers are now made with something that's supposed to help that happen.  But before you buy, hit pause.

The EPA says a hot, new thing called nano silver food storage is a no-no. Kinetic Go Green advertises that its nano silver-infused food containers make food last longer, but the government agency has ordered the company to stop selling them.

In March, the Environmental Protection Agency announced it has ordered the food storage maker to stop selling its products laced with nano silver - which the EPA calls a "pesticide." The EPA press release said claims like this have to "backed up with testing" because some pesticides can cause "cancer."

Still, the I-Team's hidden cameras manage to find them on store shelves.

The I-Team found them at T.J. Maxx in Dunwoody where our saleswoman said, "We sell a lot of them."

And why not. When you see something that promises to help food stay fresh up to "3 times longer" that'll get your attention.

Kinetic Go Green Premium Food Storage Containers offer this up as proof -- eight-day-old strawberries in a run-of-the-mill storage container not looking so good. Day eight in their containers - still looking fresh.

How can it do this? The EPA says Kinetic Go Green claimed it's nano-sized silver particles fight back bacteria, fungus and mold.

In Buckhead, at Marshalls, another discount retailer, we found the food containers on the shelves again.

But there's more. The product also claims to be "FDA approved." That's news to the FDA. A spokeswoman said, "It's not FDA approved. This falls under the EPA."

The I-Team tried talking to management at Kinetic Go Green to see how its product was still making it onto the shelves of T.J. Maxx and Marshalls. The man on the phone refused to identify himself and said, "I don't care." Then hung up.

But, the discount retailers - owned by the same company - do care. They told I-Team they were surprised to hear about the EPA's warning. In a statement, a spokeswoman for both T.J. Maxx and Marshalls said they are committed to conducting business in compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations. They plan "to remove the product from shelves."

We already know about some of the fees our banks charge -- the monthly fee, the overdraft charge, out-of-network and minimum balance fees. That's standard stuff. But did you know that the average checking account has 30 fees attached?
