Study: Cervical cancer rates higher than thought

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) - A new study says cervical cancer rates in the United States are much higher than thought.

The study says some of the most at-risk women are often overlooked. Researchers at the University of Maryland say previous studies have included women who have had hysterectomies and they can't get the cancer.

When they are taken out of the equation, the rate takes an alarming jump - from 11.7 cases per 100,000 women to 18.6. That rate becomes even higher in women ages 65 to 69.
