The Fitz File: May 12, 2014

Posted: Updated:
. - Today is Monday, May 12, the 132nd day of 2014. There are 233 days left in the year.

SECRET SERVICE PATROLS - Did the former head of the Secret Service make agents protect a staffer in Maryland because of a private dispute? Mark Sullivan according to a post report pulled members of a special patrol near the White House for at least two months in 2011 to protect his assistant in La Plata Maryland while she was engaged in a dispute with a neighbor. Sullivan resigned last year after scandal involving members of the presidential protection team hiring prostitutes and fallout over the "White House Party Crashers" who walked into a State Dinner uninvited.

ROSLYN CYCLISTS DISPUTE - In Arlington Virginia cyclists call it the "Intersection of Doom" and it lived up to tips name for Lindsey Kelley. She was cycling home at 8pm last week, entered the crosswalk at Lee Highway &N. Lynn Street on a “go” signal, when she was hit by a car. Lindsey was taken to a hospital where a U.S. Park Police officer and issued a ticket for “disregarding traffic signs or road markings,” which may cost her $70, not including U.S. District Court fees. Lindsey and many other cyclists are furious because they believe law abiding cyclists are being treated like 2nd class traffic even when they follow the rules.

MARYLAND MINIMUM WAGE - 11:00 a.m. Maryland has raised its own minimum wage to $10.10 an hour but the national rate sits at $7.25. The Federal rate say some is "creating dependence" of the federal Government thorough entitlements. Tipped workers are more than twice as likely to fall under the federal poverty line, and nearly three times as likely to rely on food stamps, as the average worker, according to a 2011 study by the Economic Policy Institute. Today Senator Cardin will be at the Tastee Diner in Silver Spring to talk about the fight to raise the Federal minimum wage.

TRANSGENDERED TROOPS? "Don't Ask Don't Tell"is now history, and woman are now allowed to train in frontline combat units. Now, is Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel ready to lift the military's ban on transgendered people severing openly in the U.S. armed forces? Hagel stopped short of endorsing the idea, but says it is being reviewed and told ABC that "Every qualified American who wants to serve our country should have an opportunity" He went on to say that more nuanced reviews of military polices would be required if the ban on transgendered people is lifted.
