MOTHER'S DAY: Rare monoamniotic twins born holding hands

Posted: Updated:

A middle school math teacher from Ohio is celebrating Mother's Day after a rare sight -- her identical twin girls were born holding hands after sharing the same amniotic sac and placenta.

Sarah Thistlewaite had been on bed rest for 57 days prior to the C-section delivery on May 9, just in time for Mother's Day.

Jenna weighed 4 pounds and 2 ounces and was 17 inches long while Jillian weighed 3 pounds 13 ounces and was 17.5 inches long.

Ever since March 14 -- also known as Pi day, Thistlewaite had been anchored to fetal monitors for 20 hours a day due to the rare condition of her pregnancy.

Monoamniotic twin pregnancies present many risks to the mother. Since the twins share an amniotic sac and placenta, the umbilical cords can become entangled or compressed. There's also a risk that one fetus' umbilical cord could wrap around the other's neck.
