Mother Accepts Deceased Son’s College Diploma

Posted: Updated:

Indianapolis, IN- Tracy Dickerson has spent the past six months mourning the sudden death of her son, Dexter Massey.

However, she spent Saturday celebrating his accomplishment of graduating college.

Massey was a senior at Marian University when he died in his sleep of natural causes in November of last year.

He had fulfilled his graduation requirements as a history major by the time of his death.

Dressed in what would have been her son's cap and gown, Dickerson accepted her son's diploma during the university's commencement ceremony.

"One day he told me, 'mama, I’m not going to walk across there' and 'I said oh yes you are, if you don't walk across there, I will,'" Dickerson said. "As soon as I get down or sad or something, somebody comes to me and says something to me and it makes me feel good and this right here is just the icing on the cake."

Dickerson says it’s the happiest moment you can have, with a sad overtone because he’s not with her anymore.

Dickerson received a standing ovation when accepting the posthumously awarded diploma.
