Clerk: Not enough signatures for Rep. Conyers to appear on ballot

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) - After a second review, the Wayne County Clerk says Rep. John Conyers does not have enough signatures to make it on the primary ballot in August. He apparently only has 592 valid signatures when he needs 1,000.

The validity of his signatures was first questioned when two of his petition circulators were said to be unregistered voters, which would violate requirements.

A final ruling on Conyers' status will be made on Tuesday.

His campaign will have three days to appeal the secretary of state.

If his name is not on the ballot Conyers could run as a write-in candidate.

UPDATED TO ADD: Statement from John D. Pirich, Partner at Honigman, Miller, Schwartz and Cohn, LLP.:

"We appreciate the effort on the part of the staff of the Wayne County Clerk's office to review the petition signatures submitted on behalf of Congressman Conyers. There are several overlapping and conflicting issues in terms of the count that will need to be sorted out as the process moves forward.

We remain optimistic that at the end of the day, there will be more than a sufficient number of signatures accepted, and that Congressman Conyers will appear on the ballot in August. There are a number of strong arguments establishing this position - supported by fact, law and precedent - that we will put forth before the appropriate authorities. Representative Conyers strongly believes that not only should every vote be counted, but that every registered voter should be able to participate in the electoral system. There is little question that the voters of the 13th District have demonstrated a strong desire for Congressman Conyers to be a candidate for reelection, and he looks forward to participating in both the primary and general elections."
