Students star in city's rap street safety video

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - Twenty-nine students from Brooklyn's P.S. 261 rap and dance in the city's new video 'Cross This Way' to teach grade school students street safety.

Various scenarios are played out by the students from walking the crosswalk with the signal; crossing at intersections with stop signs and getting across safely if a mid-block crossing is necessary.

The refrain to 'Cross This Way' is repeated often to hammer home the point: "Everybody on the streets deserves respect, so before you use the streets you got to check, check."

"I am so proud of these students who help tell the story about being safe on city streets," said DOT Commissioner Trottenberg. "With catchy lyrics and high-energy dancing, they bring to life the message that everyone shares responsibility and deserves respect."

The video is part of Mayor Bill de Blasio's Vision Zero initiative which is aimed at making streets safer for pedestrians and motorists.

Approximately 4,000 New Yorkers are seriously injured and more than 250 are killed in traffic crashes each year.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
