ARLINGTON MERMAID GONE - Goodbye Ariel. A wooden, bare breasted carving of a mermaid that was cut out of a tree stump had been a local oddity and sources of mild aggravation along Lee Highway in Arlington for years. Now without warning, she's gone. Paul Jackson had the Mermaid carved back in 2004. Some resident had complained that the Mermaid was too naked and both a cause of unsightliness and a potential traffic hazard as people slowed down to look at it. Posters on an Arlington Facebook page say the stump became rotted and the owner cut it down.
