Friends, family mourn late Plano teen who inspired #SingForNicole on social media

Posted: Updated:
A Plano teenager who died Saturday after complications from Type 1 diabetes touched many lives, and about 1,000 people honored her at a vigil Wednesday night.

Friends and family shared memories of Nicole Wilson at Russell Creek Park near her home, saying she never dwelled on her having diabetes.

She was excited to see her favorite band One Direction in August at AT&T Stadium.

Wilson’s sister, Kelly, sent a tweet with the hastag, #SingForNicole to the band, asking they dedicate her favorite song Story of My Life to her at the concert.

The tweet has more than 100,000 retweets.

Also, Wilson’s story has inspired people to donate money to a camp she attended, Camp Sweeney, for young people with diabetes.

People have donated about $12,000, enough to send four children to the camp.
