Animals seized in Prince William Co. cruelty case now available for adoption

MANASSAS, Va. -

Dozens of animals are now up for adoption after a Virginia shelter took in all kinds of creatures that police said had been mistreated by their owner.

When picking out a pet bunny, 2-year-old Nasirria doesn't need much guidance. What she doesn't know is these rabbits at the Prince William County Animal Shelter were seized three weeks ago in an animal cruelty case.

A complaint prompted the visit to Cross State's Stable in Bristow. Officers seized 59 animals.

Jodi Carlson is the veterinarian who treated the rabbits for emaciation and for a parasite in their intestines.

“There were a few of them that I was concerned would not make it and three of them didn't,” she said.

The larger animals such as horses and even a calf survived.

Larry Sams owns Cross State's Stable. He has been charged with 57 counts of animal cruelty.

“These animals were not malnourished,” he told us. “That's what we're going to prove in a court of law.”

Investigators said they also found dead animals and some animal parts.

Sams said he has nothing to hide.

“We have as many as 200 kids here on a weekday that come through our place,” said Sams. “We are the only place that invites the public 24 hours a day.”

One little lamb gulped down lunch at the shelter. The lamb, the rabbits and others are available for adoption.

The horses and dogs not available.

The white rabbits have more than doubled their weight in three weeks.

“They're just big, fat and happy and looking for good homes,” said Carlson.
