Construction Project Begins On Roosevelt Boulevard To Improve Safety

Posted: Updated:
Construction is starting on a new project to improve safety for people crossing the Roosevelt Boulevard.

It’s happening in the exact spot where a woman and her three sons were hit and killed last July.

Fox 29's Chris O'Connell reports.

Every day Cynthia Irizarry walks her two toddlers across 12 lanes of traffic on Roosevelt Boulevard. We saw first-hand how dangerous her trip can be when she had a close call with an oncoming car.

“They just fly and they honk the horn, and it is just traffic all the time,” the mother said.

Crossing the Roosevelt boulevard is a dangerous adventure all of its own.

It's estimated four pedestrians are killed every year on the Roosevelt Boulevard.

Work began on Monday to install a signalized crosswalk at this intersection where Samara Banks and her three children were struck and killed last July.

10 months later, something is being done, to help keep one of the city's most dangerous highways safer.

“It’s too much. People got to be careful, people got to be careful,” Irizarry said.

The Streets Dept. says work will be done at night 8 p.m.-6 a.m. Lanes will be closed every night through the project.

The project is being paid for by dollars collected through the Red Light Traffic Enforcement Program.
