Police in Hyattsville need your help identifying a suspect believed to be responsible for robbing and raping a woman at knifepoint over the weekend.

Hyattsville City police say the woman had just left the Prince George’s Plaza Metro station and walked across a pedestrian bridge when she noticed someone following her. It was just after 1:30 a.m. Sunday when police say a man pulled a knife and attacked the woman behind a dumpster.

Metro surveillance cameras at the Prince George's Plaza station recorded images of the suspect after the assault.

The man appears to be fairly tall and thin and was carrying a backpack. He is described as a dark skinned black male between 20 to 30 years old, wearing an orange and black "Snap Back" hat, an orange shirt and blue jeans. According to the victim, he had shoulder-length dreadlocks.

Police say the backpack was not stolen from the victim.

In one photo, the suspect appears to be balding. He is running from the station after the attack. Police say he got into an argument with a cab driver and then took off up some stairs toward a park behind the rail and bus station.

"He's scaring us a little bit,” said Lt. Chris Purvis of the Hyattsville City Police Department. “We have some good pictures and we’re hoping with the help of the community we can identify this guy,”

Police say the victim thinks the man began following her from an underpass and then across the pedestrian bridge.

As she approached the T.J. Maxx store, police say the man pulled her behind the dumpsters.

“We haven't had an incident of this magnitude since I can remember, so that's what kind of scares us,” said Lt. Purvis. “We are hoping we can get this guy.”

If you believe you know who this suspect is, you are asked to call Hyattsville City Police at 301-985-5060 and refer to case #: 14-1146.
