Operation Prom shows teens scary consequences of drinking

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) - There are nearly 10.8 million underage drinkers in America. One in six teens binge drinks. But the vast majority of parents do not think their teens will binge drink.

It is a tragic reality, the National Highway Patrol says alcohol-related crashes kill more people ages 16 to 20 than any other age group.

Operation Prom shows kids what could happen when teenagers drink on prom night. It is a mock car crash where students see their friends arrested for DUI, being put into body bags and being forced to deal with the consequences of drinking and driving.

Notre Dame College Prep in Niles is one of the schools that offered the program this year.

"We have kids pass out, cry, vomit and that means they are listening. It means they are hearing the message," organizers say.

Students often have the  mind set "it's not going to be me, it's always going to be the other guy." But Operation Prom shows them it's not always the other guy, sometimes bad things happen to someone they know.

"Once I opened the door, all the beer cans and everything fell out, like it should have if it really happened. My prom date was through the windshield on the front of the car, laying down all bloody and everything," a student participant said.

Experts say teens are not drinking alcohol as much as once reported in recent years. They attribute that decline to scary scenes, like the one Operation Prom shows.

Students say the program shows them how easily they can lose everything they worked so hard for and it makes them want to stop their friends from losing that too.
