MCHENRY, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A man died of a broken neck early Sunday after he fell from the back of a golf cart on a McHenry County road, an accident police believe was caused by intoxication.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s office responded to the incident a few minutes after midnight, and found that a man had fallen out of the back of a golf cart being driven south on Johnson Road, just north of Route 173, the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

Stephen Canfield, 20, of Harvard, was taken to Centegra Woodstock Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:25 a.m., a statement from the McHenry County Coroner’s office said. An autopsy Monday showed he died from a broken neck caused by the fall.

The 21-year-old driver and two other passengers, ages 20 and 21, were not injured, the sheriff’s office said.

Alcohol is suspected as a factor in the incident, according to police. The coroner’s office said toxicology test results are pending.

No charges had been filed as of Monday afternoon.
