The Fitz File: May 5, 2014

Posted: Updated:
. - Today is Monday, May 5, the 125th day of 2014. There are 240 days left in the year.

BENGAZHI SELECT COMMITTEE - A formal announcement naming the chair of a select committee to investigate the 2012 attack on the U.S. compound in Benghazi could happen as early as Today. Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., is likely to be named chairman of the panel. The selection of Gowdy is being read by many as a blow to the sometimes-volatile House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa, R-Calif., and his probe into the 2012 attacks, which resulted in the deaths of four Americans, including Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens.

OBAMA LUNCHES - Are healthier school lunches worth it If students throw them in the trash? New requirements pushed pushed by First Lady Michelle Obama are meeting concerns from some schools like Alexandria, Virginia. The new requirement has been phased in and more are coming in 2015. Some schools say the changes cost too much. School officials are asking Congress and the Agriculture Department to roll back some requirements on whole grains and sodium. The problem? Getting enough whole grain-rich and low sodium foods on kids plates and not winding up in the garbage.

EPA BONUS PROBE - When it came to ripping off taxpayers, former EPA official John Beal was a class by himself. The former Senior EPA official plead guilty to defrauding EPA out of nearly $900,000 in phony travel expenses and unauthorized bonuses. Now a review launched after Beale's case has found paid out nearly $500,000 in unauthorized bonuses, according to a report released by the EPA Inspector General. The IG found that 11 EPA employees received $481,819 in unauthorized bonuses between 2006 and 2013. The bonuses are to to workers from taking other jobs.

NORTHERN VIRGINIA ELECTIONS - If you have any doubt that Metros arrival can change an area, study a photo of Balston before and after Metros opening. Along those lines, get a good look Herndon now, because after the Silver line opens it may look very different. Development &population? They're big concerns as the town holds it's Mayors election tomorrow. Incumbent Mayor Lisa Merkel wants to build a high-rise development near the planned Silver Line station. Concern over a population floods and turning the area into a city is one reason Connie Haines is opposing her.
