Loyola volleyball players ecstatic over historic win

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

An electric Gentile Arena went wild after the Ramblers beat Stanford to win a national title on their home court Saturday night.

“There was a feeling of relief that hit me half way through the game. What we’ve been focused on for the last 365 days was finally going to come true,” said senior teammate Peter Jasaitis.

By Sunday afternoon, Jasaitis and teammate Owen McAndrews were beaming on campus, still soaking it all in, sporting their “National Champions” fitted hats and a big smile.

“It’s a lot of fun for this school because it hasn’t been known as a sports school but the amount of pride that has been shown on campus lately and the neighboring community, it’s unbelievable so I’m extremely excited,” said Jasaitis in an interview with Fox 32’s Tisha Lewis.

“As days go by, weeks go by, we’re definitely going to realize how big it was, that we made history,” said Loyola sophomore volleyball player Owen McAndrews.

The historic victory happened before a packed crowd and a nationally televised audience.

“We would always talk about it as a joke, oh yeah, we’re going to win a national championship and now it actually happened and we’re just like, wow,” said McAndrews.

“I think literally everybody has been posting on Facebook and Twitter and everything that we finally won, so hopefully that has been getting people over to Loyola and seeing how we have come to be a bigger athletic team,” said Loyola student Beatrice Alleyne.

“Home of the Men’s Volleyball 2014 National Champions,” now greets visitors and students on a digital billboard on campus.

“So it’s definitely amazing, especially here, especially with other sports, they’re not doing bad, but they weren’t doing well so it’s definitely something cool to have on campus,” said Loyola student Jay Ramadurai.

“I couldn’t be more thankful for the dedication my teammates put in to make this happen,” said Jasaitis.

Fox 32’s Tisha Lewis reports Jasaitis and McAndrews say a two week vacation filled with sleep awaits them - and don’t be surprised to see some of the faces of Loyola’s Men’s Volleyball Team on Team USA or playing on overseas teams.
