Rape victim speaks out, alleged attacker arrested

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) - A rape suspect is under arrest and his alleged victim is sharing her horrifying story. The brave woman managed to escape. She says she's speaking out to empower other women who've been victims of similar crimes.

The victim tells Fox 2 she tried to fight off her attacker but had few options because the suspect had a gun. He chained her up in the basement of a house on Woodmont Wednesday. The man who was an acquaintance bound, beat and repeatedly raped her.

"You would never think looking at him that he would be capable of doing something this heinous," she told Fox 2.

We are not revealing the victim's identity. The woman says she went to the store and the suspect called and asked her to drop off a movie. When she did, he pulled a gun and held her captive. Eventually she convinced him to let her shower. When he fell asleep, she snuck out of the house and ran for help. She called 9-1-1 from a nearby store. The suspect turned himself in Saturday.

"I'm empowering ladies to share their experiences," she told Fox 2. "Don't let someone get away with that."

This is not the suspected rapist's first run in with the law. He's on probation for assault with a dangerous weapon. He is locked up and will likely be arraigned Monday on 10 felony charges. When he's arraigned, prosecutors will have the opportunity to collect DNA which could connect him to other crimes.
