The Fitz File: May 2, 2014

Posted: Updated:
. - Today is Friday, May 2, the 122nd day of 2014. There are 243 days left in the year.

WWI CROSS MEMORIAL - The World War 1 Memorial in Bladensberg Maryland is hard to miss. The 40-foot-tall Cross memorial stands in a middle of a busy intersection at Baltimore Avenue and Annapolis Road. But The American Humanist Association has filed a federal lawsuit to tear down the Bladensberg Peace Cross. The lawsuit against the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission that the Christian symbol violates the separation of church and state and the First Amendment. They want the cross torn down from government property.

CONGRESS SEX HARASSMENT - Congress does a pretty good job of telling others what to do but often doesn't apply that to its own business. A congresswoman Thursday introduced an amendment to Congress's own operations spending bill to force members and their staffs attend sexual harassment training. Kissing Congressman Vance McCallisteer &former members Mark Foley, Eric Massa are examples say backers of the amendment of whythe House of Representatives is viewed as the "House of Hypocrisy" and why Capitol Hill should have a higher standard and live by the same rules most of the private sector abides by.

MCCAULIFE GOING ALONE? He's not getting anywhere in trying to getVirginia's legislature to expand Medicaid in the state under Obamacare so Gov Terry McCauliffe is reportedly readily to try to just do it himself. The Post says he and his top advisers have consulted lawyers, health-care experts and legislators on how to bypass the GOP-dominated House of Delegates. Is that legal? Nobody's sure. The move lets the Commonwealth use a key state option under the Affordable Care Act, and it could help break a budget standoff and avoid a possible upcoming government shutdown that could happen on July 1st.

GAS PRICES RISING - Have you filled up and seen your wallet empty lately? Bad news/good news. Gas prices in Virginia Maryland and DC are climbing. At $3.69 that might be the hight of the year, and won't go much further. AAA gasoline averages are up from $3.53 a month ago. But wholesale gas prices appeared to have topped out. Whys this happening? Rising US oil production has boosted U.S. crude oil inventories to nearly 398 million barrels, the highest level since 1931. Sluggish US economic growth means there's little pressure to drive prices up.

Today's Weather:

@fox5weather: Looks like a nice weekend! We are going to have some clouds on Saturday. Maybe a sprinkle. Then a beautiful Sunday. http://t.co/bOQqp58Cq4

Today's History:

In 1863, during the Civil War, Confederate Gen. Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson was accidentally wounded by his own men at Chancellorsville, Va.; he died eight days later.

In 1945, the Soviet Union announced the fall of Berlin, and the Allies announced the surrender of Nazi troops in Italy and parts of Austria.

In 2011, Osama bin Laden was killed by elite American forces at his Pakistan compound, then quickly buried at sea after a decade on the run.
