NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - Police are investigating the discovery of at least two dozen dead cats found inside plastic bags hanging from trees in Yonkers Thursday, according to the SPCA of Westchester. Some of the cats were badly decomposed but others appeared more recently killed.

They were found in a wooded lot near Overlook Terrace.  The bags were tied up in a row on branches of the trees.

City sanitation workers who were in the area for an annual cleanup came across the grisly scene.  Some of the cats had been ripped from the bags, apparently by wildlife.

Ernest Lungaro, from the SPCA, calls it an "odd" event and says it remains an open investigation.  He says it appears the cats were dead before being put into the bags.  A few could have been hung in the past week or so.  Others could have been there at least a year.

The SPCA of Westchester transported the bodies to a local veterinarian to perform necropsies on three of the bodies. The cause of death was determined to be blunt force trauma to the head. It is believed that all of the cats suffered the same death. Additional items were removed from the scene for further analysis.

Investigators were surprised that no one had noticed anything earlier since the area is in plain site of buildings and sidewalks.

If you know anything about this case you can call Yonkers Police at (914) 377-7724 or the SPCA at 914-941-7797.

President Barack Obama is going on a fundraising sweep through New York and Rhode Island as he continues to help Democrats raise money for November's elections. Obama headlines three events on Friday. Two in Westchester County, and the third is in Newport, Rhode Island. The New York fundraisers will benefit the Democratic National Committee, which is still paying off debt from the 2012 campaign season.
