What a catch! 6th graders nab 700 pound shark

Posted: Updated:

Three 6th graders from Ohio reeled in a nearly 700-pound mako shark Wednesday morning about 25 miles off the coast.

Sam Von Duhn, Ryan Roberts, Tony Musca and their dads were fishing for amberjack but weren't catching anything.

"We lost a couple," Mark Von Duhn said. "We knew there was another predatory fish down there."

At the time, they didn't know how big it was, so the dads asked the boys if they were up to the challenge.

"We asked the boys, 'would you like to take on the shark or another amberjack? They said we'll take it on, we'll tag team it, and we'll do it," Mark said.

All three boys took turns reeling in the shark, which they said took about 20 minutes.

"It was one good spring break," Sam said.

They plan to split the shark meat between the families and people at the marina.
