Bill Medley: The Time Of My Life

Posted: Updated:

"Most played record in the history of America radio. I wish I wrote it, but I sang it".

That's Bill Medley talking to Steve about the legendary song "You've Lost That Loving Feeling"...he stopped by to talk about his new memoir, "The Time of my Life", which covers his success as a Righteous Brothers, his life off stage, and his career resurgence thanks to his music in a couple of iconic movies. "Top Gun", "Ghost", and one that he thought sounded "like a bad porno movie"..."Dirty Dancing". So how did he and Bobby Hatfield come up with their name?

"A lot of the black marines heard there was these two white guys down at the club singing rhythm and blues so they'd start coming down...and they'd say 'boy what a righteous suit you're wearing' which meant good. If they liked you as a friend they'd call you brother. And lots of time Bobby and I would be coming to work and they'd say 'hey righteous brother' how you doing?'...I wrote a song...we went and recorded it and we needed a name and Bobby said let's use the name that the marines have been calling us."

Bill says they were having so much fun on stage that they never thought it would last.

"We loved the music, we took the music serious but we didn't take our career serious because this was gonna to go away."

Bill also talked about the songs that got away...ones that became hits after he'd passed on singing them.

"In The Ghetto. We Gotta Get out of This Place. He Ain't Heavy He's My Brother".

Bill is signing copies of "The Time of my Life" at the Barnes & Noble in Santa Monica Wednesday night at 7.

He's also performing in a series of intimate shows this Summer. He'll be at the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts in Cerritos June 18th and 19th. He'll play the Old Town Temecula Community Theater June 22nd and in July, Bill will be at the Lewis Family Playhouse in Rancho Cucamonga.

"The Time of my Life" is out now.

Fun facts about Bill Medley (Source: Wikipedia)

Bill is an American singer and songwriter, best known as one half of The Righteous Brothers. Medley met his singing partner Bobby Hatfield while attending California State University, Long Beach. The pair began singing as a duo in 1962. Their first single was "Little Latin Lupe Lu"; their first hit was "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'", produced by Phil Spector in 1964. Follow-up hits included "(You're My) Soul and Inspiration" and "Unchained Melody".

The duo broke up in 1968, but returned with another hit in 1974, "Rock And Roll Heaven", and they continued to appear together until Hatfield's death in November 2003. The Righteous Brothers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in March 2003 by one of their biggest fans, Billy Joel.

Medley also had a moderately successful solo career. In 1968, he released "Peace, Brother, Peace" and "Brown Eyed Woman" both of which were Top 40 Pop hits. In 1969, he won 2nd place at the Festival Internacional da Cançao (FIC) in Rio de Janeiro, with the song "Evie", by Jimmy Webb. He also released several solo albums during the 1970s and 1980s. In 1984 and 1985, he charted 5 singles on the country charts with the biggest of these being the Top 20 country hit, "I Still Do". In 1987 his duet with Jennifer Warnes, "(I've Had) The Time of My Life", was included on the Dirty Dancing soundtrack album, and the single reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. The song won Medley and Warnes a 1988 Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal and an Academy Award for Best Original Song for the composers. Among his other notable songs are "Most of All You", the closing theme to the movie Major League; "Friday Night's A Great Night For Football" from Tony Scott's movie, The Last Boy Scout; and the theme song for the Growing Pains spinoff, Just The Ten of Us.

Bill Medley also recorded a vocal track for the song Lullabye on Jimmy Chamberlin's (of Smashing Pumpkins fame) solo album, Life Begins Again.

Bill Medley appeared in the two-part episode "Finally!" of the hit TV show, Cheers.

In 1998 Medley along with Jennifer Warnes sang Show Me The Light during the end credits of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer: The Movie.

Medley's daughter, McKenna Medley, is herself a singer and as of November 2006 was performing in Branson, Missouri as opening act for The Comets.

Through the mid to late 2000s Bill Medley performed mainly in Branson, Missouri at Dick Clark's American Bandstand Theater, Andy Williams Moon River Theater and The Starlite Theatre.

In 2011, Bill Medley began touring on the road again with his daughter McKenna and the 3 Bottle Band. On November 24th, 2013, he performed in concert for the first time in the UK at the famed Wembley Arena. Medley was also booked for an eight-date tour of Australia in March 2014, which was canceled.

Bill Medley has written a memoir which is scheduled to be published in April 2014 and will be titled "The Time of My Life: A Righteous Brother's Memoir."

Bill will be signing copies of his book at the Barnes and Noble in Santa Monica tonight at 7:00pm. ‘The Time Of My Life’ is out now.
