New gun bill to allow firearms in churches, bars and government buildings

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA - Georgia’s soon-to-be new gun law will now allow you to carry a gun in certain public places. Here is a quick checklist of where it will soon be ok to carry a firearm.

Churches will be ok to carry a gun in if the congregation allows it. It will soon also be your freedom to carry a gun in bars, some government buildings, and in open areas of the airport.

If you want to carry your gun in any of these places you will have to have a carry license.

There are a lot of mixed opinions on this bill.

"It's just not a good idea," says former Atlanta Police Officer Darryl Nelson.

"If you're licensed and the church opts in, why not? It's our freedom," says bill supporter Autumn Pangyanscki.

"Every single poll I've taken for fox 5 had the same result. The majority of georgians didn't like it. Female voters really didn't like it and independent voters really didn't like it,” says Fox 5 political analyst Matt Towery.

So with as many as 70 percent of people opposing the bill, in an election year how did we end up with this law?

Towery points to powerful pro-gun lobbyists at the capitol but he also says there will be almost no pushback against the politicians who voted for it. Towery says even in the state's biggest race, the race for governor, both candidates support the bill.

"The governor has nothing to lose by signing this bill, he makes those who support this expansion of the right to carry, he makes them happy,” says Towery. “He signs the bill, he solidifies their support and Carter can't complain about it, because he voted for it. Which I think was a real political blunder for Jason Carter."

Bill supporter Autumn Pangyanscki says it's a question of protection and freedom, not politics.

"I carry my gun everywhere I'm legally allowed. I think if you're a responsible citizen, if you've passed and gone through the checkpoints to carry your weapon, you should be able to do so,” says Pangyanscki.
