Skydiver dies after crashing into NJ backyard

NEW JERSEY (MYFOXNY.COM) -

A 49-year-old sky diver from Brooklyn died after crashing into the backyard of a home in New Jersey.

According to officials, Arkady Shenker wore a specialized parachute during the jump, which took place early Sunday afternoon.

Shenker was known to be an experienced skydiver who had more than 300 jumps under his belt.

He was using a "wing suit," which gives a skydiver more surface area and enables a significant increase in lift.

Windsuits are sometimes referred to as birdman or bat suits.

Shenker was skydiving in a plane operated by Freefall Adventures in Monroe along with 15 others.  He landed in a yard about a half-mile away from the drop zone in Washington Township.

It's unclear whether the parachute opened properly.  Federal officials are investigating the accident.
