Montgomery Co. police conducts pedestrian crosswalk sting

Posted: Updated:
GAITHERSBURG, Md. -

It is a major problem for many communities across the D.C. area -- drivers who don't yield to pedestrians. Police in Montgomery County cracked down on offenders by setting up a sting to nab violators.

Officers set up their pedestrian safety operation Wednesday up along Muddy Branch Road in Gaithersburg.

Police interns in yellow shirts walked through crosswalks and officers pulled over drivers and gave out tickets to those who didn’t stop.

Montgomery County police say approximately 480 people were hit by cars last year in which 13 people lost their life.

But police say it is not only the driver at fault. Those who jaywalk by not crossing at the crosswalk are also a huge factor in traffic accidents -- some ending up deadly. Those violators were also being targeted in this sting.
