NYPD probe arson cases at 3 Brooklyn churches

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The NYPD is looking for an arsonist who has targeted three churches in three days. The most recent act of arson happened at St. Mark's Church in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. The pastor is happy that they were able to put the fire out and he hopes that their surveillance video leads to an arrest.

Cathilda Sterling, the parish secretary, came in early to get a head start because the office is busy during Holy Week. She found a broken window and a burning newspaper that ignited a box of candles on the window sill. She ran across the street to tell the reverend.

"It's just absolutely sure it's a miracle I was not supposed to be here and she was not supposed to come to work until 9 o'clock," Rev. Peter Bramble said. He was able to put the fire out.

Now police are looking for the man caught on St. Mark's surveillance cameras.

"People are just wild or deranged or maybe he just hates churches," the reverend said. In the meantime, he said said the church will increase security.

Over the weekend, two other churches were targeted in Brownsville. On Saturday the suspect lit a newspaper on fire, burning the inside of the doorway at the Greater New Beginnings Church.

And not far away on Sunday, an unknown object was thrown through a window that caused a small fire in the bathroom of Iglesia Cristiana Church.

"We have justice in heaven but we also have justice here," said Pastor Rodriguez, the supervisor at Iglesia Cristiana Church and pastor at the Spanish American Christian church on Fulton Street. "I see the vandalism around the neighborhood and I am not an exception"

Police ask that if you see or hear anything to call Crimes Stoppers at 800-577-TIPS.

"A mixed bag": That's how the Straphangers Campaign characterizes New York City subways; some good parts and some bad. For example, the C train breaks down most often, not surprising since the line has 50-year-old cars. But C trains were also the cleanest in the transit system.Straphangers said the worst subway trains were the IRT's No. 2.
